Dominique Vargas Riquelme
Autonomous Midwife
Founder and Director, Escuela Doula Mujer Medicina · Chile
Dominique is the mother of three children, all born at home.
She holds a Master's degree and Bachelor's degree in Education and is a Special Education teacher specializing in Multiple Educational Needs (NEEM) and neurological conditions.
Her first teachers were her mother and grandmothers, women who dedicated their lives to accompanying the dying, deeply shaping her understanding of guiding people through life's sacred thresholds.
For more than fifteen years, Dominique has accompanied women through profound life transitions. She began supporting end-of-life processes for children and youth with disabilities and, for the past decade, has primarily attended home births while continuing to accompany people through death and grief.
Her practice integrates therapeutic, physical, and spiritual care, drawing from extensive training in massage therapy, osteopathy, prenatal and postpartum yoga, Ayurveda, dance therapy, and music therapy. This multidisciplinary path has given her a deep understanding of the body's biomechanics, innate healing capacity, and the power of somatic accompaniment.
Her journey has also been profoundly shaped by traditional midwifery, studying with respected teachers including Abuela Nubia Rodríguez, Laura Torres, Vanya Castro, and Sat Kirpal Kaur, along with many other mentors in traditional birthwork and community care.
Dominique identifies as an autonomous midwife apprenticed within living traditions, formed through experience, ancestral knowledge, community learning, and the path of doula work that eventually led her into midwifery. She also considers her own home births among her greatest teachers.
In 2018, she founded Escuela Doula Mujer Medicina Chile, where she has accompanied women from many territories in the Art of Holding Space, weaving together ancestral wisdom and contemporary knowledge to strengthen culturally rooted approaches to birth, healing, and community care.
